Choate Rosemary 뉴스: Gilyard ’98 Appointed as Head of Student and Academic Life
On March 3, 2026, Head of School Alex Curtis announced that Will Gilyard ’98 has been appointed Choate Rosemary Hall’s next Head of Student and Academic Life, effective July 1, 2026.
"Those of you who work closely with him already know the qualities he brings to this role: compassionate leadership, intellectual agility, humor, careful listening, and integrity," Dr. Curtis wrote. "He knows our students well; he understands our faculty deeply; and he believes fully in Choate’s mission."
Working closely with the Head of School, the Head of Student and Academic Life oversees day-to-day School operations and leads decision-making related to student, faculty, and family matters. In partnership with school leadership, Gilyard will help cultivate a vibrant, inclusive community that promotes academic excellence and personal growth for all.
A Bronx native and Prep 9 alumnus, Will spent his four years at Choate playing football, hanging out with friends, and attending CALSA meetings. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Williams College and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Saint Joseph.
"As an alum, stepping into this role is both deeply meaningful and humbling. Choate shaped me in important ways as a young man, and much of what I value about education, community, curiosity, and care for the whole student, grew out of my experience here," he said. "To now have the opportunity to help steward the student and academic experience for the next generation of Choate students feels both like an incredible privilege and also a tremendous responsibility."
Throughout his career, Gilyard has held key leadership roles at The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine, where he served as Dean of Students and Head of the Upper School, and at Kingswood Oxford School, where he was Dean of Students. He has also served as a trustee of The Montessori School of Greater Hartford and The Foote School, and as core faculty with the Interschool Leadership Institute for Educators of Color.
Gilyard returned to Wallingford in 2020 as a Form Dean and Senior Associate of Alumni Engagement before being appointed Dean of Students in 2023. Known for his warmth, fairness, humor, and thoughtful leadership, he is widely respected for his ability to connect meaningfully with young people.
"I hope to continue strengthening the connection between student life and the academic program so that students feel supported, challenged, and known," he explained. "At its best, a school like Choate helps young people grow not only as scholars but as people of character and purpose.”
Choate Rosemary Hall, Will Gilyard ’98 학생·학사 생활 총괄 책임자로 임명
2026년 3월 3일, 학교장 Alex Curtis는 Will Gilyard ’98을 Choate Rosemary Hall의 차기 학생 및 학사 생활 총괄 책임자(Head of Student and Academic Life)로 임명한다고 발표했다. 해당 임명은 2026년 7월 1일부터 발효된다.
Curtis 교장은 “이미 그와 긴밀히 협업하고 있는 분들은 그가 이 역할에 적합한 이유를 잘 알고 있을 것”이라며, “따뜻한 리더십, 뛰어난 지적 유연성, 유머 감각, 경청하는 자세, 그리고 높은 도덕성을 갖춘 인물”이라고 밝혔다. 이어 “그는 우리 학생들을 깊이 이해하고 있으며, 교사진에 대해서도 잘 알고 있고, Choate의 교육 철학을 진심으로 믿고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
학생 및 학사 생활 총괄 책임자는 학교장과 긴밀히 협력하며 학교의 일상 운영을 총괄하고, 학생, 교직원, 학부모 관련 주요 의사결정을 이끈다. 또한 학교 리더십과 함께 학업적 우수성과 개인적 성장을 동시에 추구하는 활기차고 포용적인 공동체 형성에 중요한 역할을 하게 된다.
뉴욕 브롱크스 출신이자 Choate Prep 9 졸업생인 Gilyard는 재학 시절 미식축구를 하고 친구들과 교류하며 CALSA 모임에 참여했다. 이후 Williams College에서 심리학 학사 학위를, University of Saint Joseph에서 교육과정 및 교수법 석사 학위를 취득했다.
그는 “동문으로서 이 역할을 맡게 된 것은 매우 뜻깊고 동시에 겸손해지는 경험”이라며, “Choate는 제가 성장하는 과정에서 중요한 영향을 준 곳이며, 교육, 공동체, 호기심, 그리고 학생 전체를 돌보는 가치관의 많은 부분이 이곳에서 비롯되었다”고 말했다. 이어 “이제 다음 세대 Choate 학생들의 학교 경험을 이끌 기회를 갖게 된 것은 큰 영광이자 막중한 책임으로 느껴진다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
Gilyard는 그동안 The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine에서 학생부장(Dean of Students) 및 고등부 책임자(Head of Upper School)를 역임했으며, Kingswood Oxford School에서도 학생부장으로 활동했다. 또한 The Montessori School of Greater Hartford와 The Foote School의 이사로 봉사했고, 유색인종 교육자 리더십 프로그램인 Interschool Leadership Institute의 핵심 교수진으로도 참여했다.
그는 2020년 Form Dean 및 동문 참여 담당 시니어 어소시에이트로 Wallingford에 복귀했으며, 2023년 학생부장으로 임명되었다. 따뜻함, 공정성, 유머, 그리고 신중한 리더십으로 잘 알려진 그는 학생들과 깊이 있는 관계를 형성하는 능력으로 널리 존경받고 있다.
마지막으로 그는 “학생 생활과 학업 프로그램 간의 연결을 더욱 강화해, 학생들이 충분히 지원받고 도전받으며 동시에 자신의 존재가 존중받는다고 느끼게 하고 싶다”며, “최고의 학교는 학생들이 단순한 학습자를 넘어, 인성과 목적 의식을 갖춘 사람으로 성장하도록 돕는 곳”이라고 강조했다.
