BS/DDS, BS/DMD Program

미국 치예과 전공

미국 치과대학(Dental School)은 학교에 따라 DMD(Doctor of Dental Medicine) 또는 DDS(Doctor of Dental Surgery)로 학위를 수여합니다. 두개의 학위는 이름만 다를 뿐 차이점은 없습니다. 미국에서 치과의사가 되려면 일반적으로 Pre-Dental 또는 학부과정을 4년 수학하고 치과대학을 4년 더 공부하는 것이 원칙입니다. 따라서 보통 DDS, DMD 학위를 받기 위해서는 6~8년 정도의 시간이 걸립니다.

일부 치과대학은 학부 2년과정 이수 후 Dental school을 지원 할 자격을 주는 곳도 있지만 대부분 치대는 학부 4년과정을 마치고 진학하는 학생을 선호 합니다.

이수과목

Dental School에 진학하기 위해서는 Medical school과 마찬가지로 필수과목 이수가 필요합니다. Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics를 포함한 과정과 수학, 영어작문, 역사, 심리학 등의 인문사회학 과목들 이수가 필요합니다. 또한 아트 과목 중 woodwork이나 metalwork등 손의 움직임에 필요한 과목이나 공간 지각을 발달시킬 수 있는 과목을 학습하면 좋습니다.

버팔로 치과대학의 마키에비츠 교수는 구강 및 턱과 얼굴 그리고 머리 및 목의 종양관련, 구강 재수술 등의 분야에 세계 최고의 수술자들과 함께 연구를 하는 것을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

마키에비츠 교수는 하버드 대학에서 공중보건학으로 석사 학위를 받았고 메사추세츠병원에서 Clinical Investigation관련으로 fellowship을 마쳤습니다.

졸업 후 Career Path

미국 노동통계청에 따르면 미국내 치과 관련 직업의 수요는 2028년까지 약 8% 증가할 것으로 예측되며 Dental Laboratory technician, dental hygienists 관련 직업은 11% 증가할 것으로 예상되고 있습니다. Dental School을 졸업 후에는 다음과 같은 직업으로 진출하고 있습니다.

7 year guaranteed admission with NYU CAS and Adelphi University

B.A./D.S. 과정은 College of Arts와 뉴욕대학교 College of Dentistry가 7년간 공동으로 진행하는 프로그램입니다. 학생들은 신입생으로 입학하여 치대 교육과정에 대비할 학업과 과외 활동에 참여를 합니다. 첫 3년은 인문사회과학 관련 수업을 수강하며 대학의 핵심 커리큘럼, 생물학 등 총 104학점을 이수하게 됩니다. 학생들은 최소 3.5학점을 유지해야 하며, 약식생물학 전공에 필요한 모든 과목에서 B 이상의 성적을 받아야 합니다.

3학년 가을 학기에 프로그램 참가한 학생들은 입학시험을 치르고 치과 대학에 정식으로 지원합니다. 학생들은 4학년 가을학기에 치과대학에 입학하고 치대 1학년 동안 Liberal Art College에서 필요한 과정을 이수해야 합니다. B.A. 학위가 수여되기 위해서는 치과대학 1학년 성적표와 치대 2학년 승급 서류가 Liberal Art College 부학장에게 전달되어야 합니다.

8 year early assurance program

터프츠 대학과 터프츠 치과대학은 학생들이 8년 만에 학사와 치 의학박사 학위를 이수할 수 있는 프로그램을 제공합니다. 학생들은 2학년 봄 이후에 이 프로그램에 지원합니다. 우선 터프츠 대학 치 의학과의 인터뷰 이후에 조건부 합격이 됩니다.

그리고 최종 합격은 학생들이 4년간의 학부 과정을 마치고 최소한의 학업 기준을 유지한 후에 결정됩니다. 학생들은 졸업반 가을학기에 최종 면접을 통과해야 합니다.
