Frederick Gunn School News: Theatre Program Takes Home Three Halo Awards
The Frederick Gunn School의 학생 연극인들이 5월 27일 개최된 Halo Awards에서 총 3개의 상을 수상하며 뛰어난 성과를 거두었다.
Polly Ross(26학번)와 Eva Kwon(27학번)은 연극 《Peter and the Starcatcher》의 의상 디자인으로 Best Costume Design 상을 수상했다.
또한 Poppy Mand(27학번)은 《Peter and the Starcatcher》에서 Black Stache 역을 맡아 Best Performance in a Comic Male Role in a Play 상을 수상했다.
Portia Ntem-Mensah(28학번)은 《Peter and the Starcatcher》에서 Fighting Prawn 역, 그리고 《Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical》에서 Mrs. Phelps 역을 맡아 뛰어난 조연 활약을 인정받으며 There Are No Small Parts Award(작은 역할은 없다 상) 특별상을 수상했다.
Halo Awards는 Connecticut 주 고등학교 연극 분야 최고의 성과를 기리는 시상식으로, 매년 주 전역의 고등학교 공연 작품을 대상으로 후보를 선정한다. 올해 시상식은 Waterbury에 위치한 유서 깊은 Palace Theatre에서 레드카펫 행사와 함께 진행되었다.
연극예술부 디렉터인 Kent Burnham은 “전반적으로 정말 훌륭한 밤이었으며, 참여한 모든 학생들이 자랑스럽다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
행사에서는 Gunn School의 《Matilda the Musical》 출연진이 대표곡인 **‘Revolting Children’**을 공연하기도 했다. 이 곡은 아이들이 Miss Trunchbull을 물리치고 자유를 되찾는 내용을 담은 상징적인 넘버로, 500명이 넘는 학생 관객들 앞에서 공연되었다.
Burnham은 “학생들이 정말 훌륭하게 해냈다”며 “안무와 작품에 대한 몰입도가 이날 밤 최고의 하이라이트 중 하나였고, 관객들은 큰 박수로 화답했다”고 평가했다.
한편 《Peter and the Starcatcher》와 《Matilda the Musical》의 출연진 및 제작진은 올해 총 13개 부문에서 Halo Award 후보에 올랐다. 주요 후보 명단은 다음과 같다.

Portia Ntem-Mensah ’28 won a Specialty Award — the There Are No Small Parts Award — for her roles as Fighting Prawn in Peter and the Starcatcher and Mrs. Phelps in Roald Dahl’s Matilda, the Musical.
The Halo Awards celebrate the best in high school theatre in Connecticut. This year’s nominees were selected from productions by high schools across the state. The awards were presented at a red carpet event at the historic Palace Theatre in Waterbury.
“It was a great night overall, and I am proud of all involved,” said Kent Burnham P’29, Director of Theatre Arts.
Cast members from Gunn’s production of Matilda the Musical reprised their roles to perform “Revolting Children” — an anthem celebrating the children’s triumph over Miss Trunchbull and their freedom — in front of an audience of more than 500 of their peers. “They crushed it,” Burnham said of the cast. “The choreography and their commitment to the piece were a highlight of the night. The audience responded with huge applause.”
Together, the cast and designers of Peter and the Starcatcher and Matilda the Musical were nominated for 13 Halo Awards, including Best Contemporary Play. The nominations included:
